Pacheedaaht First Nation Exterminates Roosevelt Elk

The Pacheedaaht band, a First Nation in Port Renfrew, British Columbia, Canada (near the West Coast Trail in Pacific Rim National Park), decided that they only wanted Roosevelt Elks in their area and nowhere else. So they decided to exterminate all individuals in the Jordan River area (about 40 miles from Victoria, the Province’s capital, and 18 miles from Sooke), slaughtering at least 25 animals so far, and leaving them to rot.

The Roosevelt Elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti) is a species of special concern that only remains on Vancouver Island as it was extirpated from the rest of British Columbia.

The BC Conservation Service was notified of the crime but elected to not act on the information or even investigate the matter.
